The gold MEH letters on the office wall

Filing a claim with the National Insurance Institute

The different benefit routes at National Insurance, the documents attached to a claim, reading the decision and the ways to appeal.

Benefit routes

Israel’s National Insurance Institute administers different routes, including work injury, general disability, disabled-child benefits and mobility benefits. Each has its own eligibility conditions and procedure. Medical recognition, a disability assessment and entitlement to payment are not necessarily the same decision.

The documents and the decision

An organised file includes relevant medical records, a description of limitations, income documents and earlier decisions. Tailor the material to the claim. Read the reasons and committee minutes when a decision arrives, not just the disability percentage.

Appeals

Depending on the decision, an appeal or Labour Court proceeding may be available, sometimes on a legal question only. Check the deadline and permitted scope separately. A change in medical condition may justify examining a deterioration-of-condition route, subject to its requirements.
