The gold MEH letters on the office wall

Notice periods and severance pay

The length of the notice period, entitlement to severance pay and how it is calculated, and the documents to bring for a review.

Notice of termination

The notice period depends on length of service, the method of salary payment and applicable arrangements. Working through the notice period and receiving payment in lieu following immediate termination can have different consequences.

Severance pay

Entitlement and the amount payable depend on the circumstances of termination, employment period, qualifying salary and fund contributions. Section 14 arrangements and contractual terms may also matter. Dismissal shortly before completing a year of employment requires examination of the circumstances.

What to bring for a review

Bring the dismissal or resignation letter, employment agreement, payslips, contribution statements and hearing invitation. Changes in working hours, commissions and bonuses may be relevant. Reviewing severance does not replace examining other final-account entitlements.
