Claims against the Ministry of Defense

Recognition of an injury or illness caused by military service: the application to the Rehabilitation Division, the records required and the medical committee.

The application for recognition

An application to the Rehabilitation Department begins with examining eligibility for the route and the relationship between the injury and service. The appropriate route depends on service status, timing and circumstances; an injury during service is not automatically recognised.

Documenting the injury

An injury report, medical records, an account of the circumstances and witness details may support the application. Alternative evidence can be examined when a contemporaneous document is missing. Claims may concern physical injury, illness or psychological injury related to service.

The medical committee

If the injury is recognised, disability is assessed medically under the relevant process. Preparation involves current records and a description of limitations. Certain decisions can be challenged subject to the applicable law and deadlines. Information about applying independently and available assistance is also provided by the Rehabilitation Department.
