The gold MEH letters on the office wall

Loss of earning capacity insurance

What loss of earning capacity cover pays, what the occupation definition in the policy decides and what to do when the insurer rejects the claim.

What the cover is intended to provide

Loss-of-earning-capacity cover may provide monthly payments when illness or injury affects the ability to earn a living. Cover may be included in a private policy, managers’ insurance or a pension fund; each arrangement has different conditions.

The occupation definition in the policy

Check the occupational definition, required level of incapacity, waiting period and policy extensions. Some policies assess the insured’s specific occupation; others also consider another reasonable occupation. A medical disability percentage alone does not necessarily establish entitlement.

Rejection of the claim by the insurer

Medical records, a job description and income evidence help support an application. If a claim is rejected or paid only in part, the decision is assessed against the policy wording and the need for an appropriate expert opinion. Rehabilitation, partial disability and hospitalisation extensions depend on the specific agreement.
